How do we tell what someone is feeling?

Daisy: Journey Earth and Sky: Blue Bucket Award Step 1

  • Have each girl act out an emotion and have the other girls guess what the emotion is.

  • Ask how they could tell what the girl was feeling.

Notes:  The girls loved this one and didn’t want to stop.  I did not realize how fun this one would be.

What is a conflict and how do we settle them?

Read the following story and discuss:

It has been raining outside, but now the rain has stopped.  You are at a friend’s house, and you are trying to decide what to do.  Your friend wants to stay indoors and draw pictures.  You want to go outdoors and splash in the rain puddles.  Neither of you wants to change your mind, but you both want to play together.

Ask the girls for some ideas about how to solve this problem

Possible solutions include:

1) One of you might be nice enough to let your friend have her way and say “Let’s do what you want to do.  Next time, we can do what I want to do.”

2) You might agree to do both things!  You coule first go splash in some puddles and then come inside, dry off, and draw pictures together

2) You might agree to so something else altogether

Draw picture of yourself

Daisy Journey Earth and Sky: Blue Bucket Award Step 2

Tell the girls that they will draw a picture of themselves, but there is a challenge.  They will only have a few crayons (one of each color).  How will they draw their picture.  How will they share?  Have them brainstorm ideas and then try out their solution and see how it works.  When the sketches are done, have them sit in a circle and share their sketches with the group. Reflect on how difficult or easy it was to share the items.

Notes:  This actually created a surprising number of conflicts and they really did have to work on how to make things fair and figure out what to do when a bunch of girls wanted the same color

Role play helping a friend late for school

Tell the girls:

You and your mom stop by your friend’s house to pick her up and walk her to school.  She is running late.  She is rushing to get ready and seems upset.  What do you do?

If they have trouble getting going, some ideas for discussion are:

  • Would you yell and your friend and say hurry up

  • Would you tell her not to rush and it is okay to be late

  • Would you offer to help her get ready?  Get her lunch, backpack, gloves, hat

Find colors

Daisy Earth and Sky: Session 2

Tell the girls that they are going to practice observing things around them.

Give them a sheet with the names of different colors and a pencil and have them walk around the room and in the hall looking for things that have that color.  They can write it or draw it.

When they are finished, have them share some of their observations

Notes  The girls loved this and especially enjoyed working in teams.

How plants drink

Daisy Between Earth and Sky: Session 3

Talk about plants and what they need to grow - sun, water, clean air and soil

Act out how plants grow starting from a seed.

Act out what happens to them if they don’t have water, sun, clean air, etc.

Notes: Girls enjoyed this one, but went very fast

Role play

Between Earth and Sky Session 3

I am feeling this, you’re feeling that!

Ask the girls to team up in groups and role play this scenario.

Three of you are jumping rope and a new neighbors comes by to ask if she can play, too.

One girl does not want the new girl to join.  She says, “Your jacket is such an ugly color.  It makes my eyes hurt. Go away.”

The new girl looks very upset.

What should the other girls do.

For discussion:

What do you think about what the girl said to the new girl?

Has anyone ever said anything like that to you?  How did it make you feel?

Have you ever said anything like that?  How did it make the other person feel?  How did it make you feel?

Why is it good to be kind to all kinds of people?

Why is it good to have all kinds of friend - ones who look different, ones who like different things, ones who act differently from you?
  Session 3
At home activity

Dear Daisy,

  • To complete the Firefly Badge, write down one or more things you are good at.

  • Now teach this thing to someone else and share this experience with the group.

Some examples are:

You know how to do a great cartwheel and you teach your little sister.

You are a great dancer.  Teach your move to your mom.

You know how to make an origami balloon and you teach your brother.

You are really good at math, so you teach your friend how to do a math problem that she is having trouble with.
